LACR team consists of dedicated, enthusiastic and creative scientists who are passionate to pursue cutting edge research to improve life of cancer patients

Prof. Alessandra Curioni-Fontecedro
Principal Investigator
Alessandra Curioni-Fontecedro, is Full Prof of Oncology at the University of Fribourg and Head of Medical Oncology at the Cantonal Hospital of Fribourg.
In addition, she is the president of the Lung Cancer working group of the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (SAKK); she is the coordinator of the Lung Cancer Program at the European School of Oncology (ESO). In ESMO, she is faculty member of the group Investigational Immunotherapy and editor in Chief of the ESMO Daily reporter journal.
Prof Curioni-Fontecedro obtained her medical degree from University Campus Bio-Medico (UCBM) Rome, Italy. She did a double MD at the Department of Molecular Biology of the University of Zurich and at the University Campus Bio-Medico in Rome. Prof Curioni-Fontecedro’s was scientific physician at the Laboratory of Immuno-Oncology of the University Hospital in Zurich (Switzerland) and at the laboratory of Experimental Immunology of the University of Zurich. She is principal investigator locally, nationally and internationally of multiple trials in the field of thoracic oncology. The focus of her research lab is evaluating new combinatorial treatments and their underlying mechanisms of action in mesothelioma and lung cancer with the final goal to develop new therapeutical approaches.

PD. Dr. Anurag Gupta
Head of Research
Anurag is an immunologist who obtained his master’s degree from Kanpur University, India, and completed his PhD at the University of Basel, Switzerland. His research focuses on immune responses across a broad spectrum of diseases, including reproductive disorders, autoimmune diseases, infections, and cancer. For more than twelve years, his work has centered on cancer immunology, with an emphasis on developing novel therapeutic strategies that harness protective immune responses against solid tumors and metastatic disease. At LACR, he leads a research team dedicated to advancing innovative therapies for thoracic malignancies, with a particular focus on lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Dr. Laura Heeb
Postdoc
Laura has done her bachelor’s in biology at the University of Zurich and her master’s in molecular health sciences at ETHZ. Afterwards, she worked as Research Technician at ETHZ until she started her PhD in Cancer Biology at the University Hospital Zurich, studying the tumor microenvironment during post-hepatectomy liver regeneration in the murine model. After her PhD, she started her Postdoc position at LACR, working in an interdisciplinary project focusing on the tumor microbiome and its interplay with the immune system. Her research interests include tumor immunology, physiology, microbiology and nanoparticle application.

Antoine Torchiat
PhD Student
Antoine received his master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Dundee. Antoine research focuses on the development of novel cancer therapeutics and the identification of biomarkers for patient stratification.

Catherine Pythoud
Research Technician
Catherine received her lab technician diploma at the University of Fribourg (Institut of Histology). At LACR, Catherine is assisting in research that focuses on understanding the tumor microenvironment of thoracic cancers.

Arya Nair
PhD Student
Arya holds a Master’s degree in Cancer and Molecular and Cellular Biology from Queen Mary University of London. She worked at Artios Pharma in Cambridge, where she contributed to the development of DNA damage response-based therapies for hard-to-treat cancers. Currently, her PhD research focuses on inducing tumor-specific immunity by targeting the spliceosome.

Stephanie Stadler
Research Technician
Stéphanie received her lab technician in biology diploma at the University of Fribourg (Institute of Histology). She then worked in various research laboratories in Lausanne, Fribourg, and Bern, and in a biomedical analysis laboratory specializing in histopathology. At LACR she is involved in various tasks associated with clinical samples processing
Associated LR group team

Prof. Bostjan Humar
Research Group Leader
Bostjan Humar studied Molecular Biology at the Biozentrum of the University Basel and gained his PhD in Genetics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences in 1998. During his postdoc period, he was drawn to the Cancer Genetics Laboratory of New Zealand (Dunedin, University of Otago), where he subsequently became Senior Research Fellow and co-leader of the Diffuse Gastric Cancer Group. Upon his return to Switzerland 9 years later (and a brief excursion into the pharmaceutical industry), he assumed a position as team leader of the Liver Regeneration Group within the Visceral Surgery Department of the University Hospital Zurich. He took on responsibility for the basic research program, obtained in 2015 his Venia Legendi in Experimental Surgery, later acted as the Head of the Research Unit of the Visceral Department, and was awarded Titular Professorship in 2023. As of autumn 2025, he is based at the Faculty of Sciences & Medicine of the University of Fribourg, where he is heading the Liver Regeneration Group within the newly established Hub for Translational and Liver/GI Health, a position sponsored by the University of Fribourg (Prof Alessandra Curioni) and the F Z Health Foundation. His research interests center around the basic principles driving successful liver regeneration and the biology behind diffuse gastric cancer.

Dr. Jae-Hwi Jang
Postdoctoral fellow
Jae-Hwi Jang gained his PhD with specialization in microsurgery and pathology at Keimyung University (South Korea) in 2004. During his postdoctoral period at the Visceral Surgery Department of the University of Zurich, he continued to study microsurgical approaches combined with molecular biology to accumulate expertise in various liver diseases, including fibrosis, cholestasis, and cancer. In 2012, he assumed the position of Research Scientist at the Thoracic Surgery Department to expand his surgical skills towards lung transplantation and to deepen his understanding of tumor biology through the study of thoracic malignancies. Following 10 years of preclinical research on respiratory diseases, he was re-hired by the Visceral Surgery Department to advance basic research in uterus transplantation. In 2025, he joined the Liver Regeneration Group as Senior Researcher at the Faculty of Sciences & Medicine of the University of Fribourg. Being member of the Hub for Translational and Liver/GI Health, he is responsible for all animal research, the lab organization, and the supervision of students. His research is focusing on liver biology, with a special focus on the improvement of liver regeneration in clinically viable ways.
